Notes From: Meeting with State Representative (Enfield) Karen Jarmoc,
Jan. 7, 2010 at Hazardville Fire Station
The meeting was well attended by local sports people (men, women and youths). About 80 people were there. Lots of good information and comments. Also had Massachusetts sportsmen there. A few sporting business owners and people who worked in the sporting businesses.
We were given a strong letter from Congressman Joe Courtney which asked the State of Connecticut to roll-back the DEP license fee increases.
Karen Jarmoc supports rolling back the license fee increases to a reasonable level. She is working with others to get this done. She urged all to write, e-mail or call their State Reps (Very Important for ALL sportspeople to respond!!)
Karen emphasized sportsman should suggest getting the money from other areas like increasing motor vehicle violation fees, and other law breaking fees.
Everyone was VERY concerned that sportsman license fees are now going to the General Fund.
Reports from several sources indicate the purchases of the 2010 sportsman licenses are down over 50% for residents and almost 100% for non-residents. A survey by a Mass group found that out of 108 non-residents that had bought CT licenses in the past, only 2 (bass tournament guys) intended to get a non-resident license this year.
Several Ct residents stated they will be fishing in Mass this year, it’s cheaper and better fishing!
There will be a big loss to the State in sale tax revenues because non-resident sportsman will not be coming to CT. Also a sales tax loss because many residents will no longer buy things to fish and hunt. This will also really hurt Sporting Stores.
A man who butchers deer for hunters said he has lost all his customers this year due to reduced hunting. This may mean less income tax revenue for CT!
Youths will be hurt by these increases. Many family’s can’t afford 3 or 4 licenses for a family sport.
Youth fishing derbies will be hurt. Fathers aren’t going to buy a fishing license for just the derby.
Boy Scout Fishing Merit Badge programs will suffer.
Reduction in deer hunting will cause the deer population to increase to harmful levels. More deer feeding damage, more accidents with cars on roads (possible loss of life).
Karen noted all these items and was very interested in all our inputs and information.
Remember, CONTACT our State reps and express our options. Only the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
